The Engineer is the only Unit able to deploy war structures (Warcamps).
It is also never teleported back at the start of War Time including when you are in an enemy's border, which leads to a much faster and more successful attack on another Civilization.
The Engineer has a +1 base bonus damage against structures, because of this ability it is a very important Unit when fighting in a War.
NOTE: You can carry more than one crossbow at once, but shooting one will empty all other crossbows in the players inventory.
You can gain experience points by killing a mob. Currently, there is no preferred mob type for this unit. There is also a list of the required amount of experience before you can level your unit.
