The Cottage is a Tile Improvement that provides shelter for your Residents and generates Coins. The Cottage consumes food items that are stored in the Granary or Warehouse. In return it provides a good amount of Coins every hour at Hourly Tick. If the feeding Structure runs out of food, the Cottage will start starving and might level down after some time. They also won't generate any Coins during the starvation, so it's important to keep the feeding Structure stocked at all times.

It's very important to keep this structure safe during War-Time since if it gets destroyed it will lose 24 XP points and it will not generate any Culture until the Cottage is repaired.
You can upgrade your Cottages to a higher level. Doing this will allow you to feed your Cottage to that level. This means you will get more income from it.
To level up to the next level, your town requires one of the following technologies; Writing, Monarchy, Land Taxes, Feudalism, Philosophy, Urbanization, Machinery or Early Empire.
